WASHINGTON, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th Sep, 2026) The US military and intelligence agencies are considering reducing the number of personnel and military facilities in the middle East, according to CNN. The broadcaster reported that the Trump administration is considering a significant reduction in the US presence in the region if it succeeds in ending the conflict with Iran.
Citing senior government sources, CNN said the United States had greatly expanded its military and intelligence network in the Middle East after the 9/11 attacks to conduct operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Yemen and Libya. However, the recent conflict with Iran has exposed weaknesses and vulnerabilities in US infrastructure across the Middle East.
The report said informal discussions among military and intelligence officials are aimed at developing a postwar strategy for a future for which the president has not issued a clear policy.
According to sources, 50,000 US troops, two aircraft carriers and more than a dozen other warships are currently deployed in the Middle East.
CIA personnel who had been withdrawn are also being sent back to the region. The US military is also reviewing measures to strengthen the defenses of its remaining forces in the region. Two sources confirmed to CNN that relocating some sensitive facilities underground to protect them from drone and missile attacks is under consideration.
Although the Pentagon has long considered moving military bases underground, the Iranian attacks have increased the urgency of implementing the plan. Military officials have also prepared various possible plans to restructure the US forces in the region by next year.
