UNITED NATIONS, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th Aug, 2026) Pakistan told the UN Security Council of its deep concern over escalating violence in Sudan and strongly condemned the aggressive assaults by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is actively trying to overthrow the internationally recognized Sudanese government.
"Reports of RSF’s aggressive military posture and the risk of further escalation must be viewed against the pattern of mass atrocities committed by the RSF in Darfur, including in El Geneina and El Fasher.," Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, said Monday during a debate on the worsening situation in Sudan.
''The Council and the international community cannot stand by as another city – more civilians – are subjected to such atrocities," he said in the course of the debate convened by Denmark, the 15-member Council's president for the month of August.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen presided over the meeting.
The conflict in Sudan is an ongoing civil war that began in April 2023 when a power struggle broke out between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF)
In his remarks, Ambassador Asim Ahmad highlighted the suffering of civilians in the conflict, which is an ongoing civil war that began in April 2023 when a power struggle broke out between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF)
"We strongly condemn attacks against civilians and civilian objects, including hospitals, markets, schools, places of worship, humanitarian facilities and aid convoys, he said, urging all parties to comply with international humanitarian law.
"Civilians must be protected, and humanitarian workers must be able to carry out their life-saving work safely and without interference."
Pakistan, he said, calls for safe, rapid, sustained and unhindered humanitarian access to all those in need, including in Darfur, the Kordofans and Blue Nile.
"We appreciate the Government of Sudan for keeping the Adre crossing available and for facilitating humanitarian operations," the Pakistani envoy said, underscoring that funding gaps must also be urgently addressed.
Emphasizing the need to resolve the Sudanese conflict, the Pakistani envoy reiterates its firm support for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity.
"Sudan’s national institutions must be preserved and strengthened", he said, adding, "It would not be advisable for the Council to consider or support any steps that could weaken them.
"We reject any parallel political structures that risk fragmenting the country."
Pakistan, he added, underscores the primacy of the African Union in efforts to resolve this conflict, the only solution to which is a political one.
"We welcome the recent visit and engagement of the AU Peace and Security Council with the Sudanese Government."
Ambassador Asim Ahmad said the people of Sudan deserve peace, security and dignity, and urged the Security Council to act with unity and responsibility: to protect civilians, preserve Sudan’s unity and national institutions, and help the Sudanese people move towards a peaceful political settlement.
