Drone Strikes Hit Wine Trader Near Danube River

The San Marino-flagged tanker Wine Trader was positioned roughly 13 nautical miles (24km) east of Sulina, near the mouth of the River Danube, when crew members reported blasts on Thursday morning.

Surrounding vessels operating in the region reported that the tanker was struck by two uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs). Naval authorities confirmed the fire and explosions, which triggered immediate emergency protocol across nearby maritime channels.

Escalating Warfare in Black Sea Shipping Routes

This incident follows a series of regional escalations in maritime warfare and autonomous weapon deployments. Russian military drones were tracked overnight operating near Ukraine's Snake Island, close to the location of the attack.

In official statements, Russian authorities claimed to have targeted two cargo ships carrying military supplies to Odesa, though they did not specify the names of the hit vessels. The attack occurs just days after two commercial ships were hit by drones off the coast of Bulgaria, resulting in one ship sinking and diplomatic tensions rising in the region.

According to maritime news reports citing BBC News, regional naval forces are continuing monitor operations as geopolitical conflict threatens critical Black Sea commercial shipping lanes.
