England Seeks Strategic Dominance Against Papua New Guinea

England head coach Brian McDermott has instructed his squad to maintain tactical discipline and avoid rushing for points during their crucial Rugby League World Cup clash against Papua New Guinea in Wollongong.

Following an overwhelming 82-0 victory over France, England faces a strictly defined scenario to reach the semi-finals. They must make up a 68-point differential gap on Samoa while relying on Tonga to defeat Samoa in their upcoming fixture.

Sticking to the Game Plan

McDermott emphasized that early patience is vital, drawing parallels to their victory against France where England remained scoreless for the opening 22 minutes before dominating the match.

"There's a discipline in that we don't start looking for things outside of how we want to play," McDermott stated. He stressed that adhering to foundational structures will eventually create scoring opportunities against the Kumuls.

Tactical Squad Adjustments

To optimize attacking potential, McDermott has reshuffled key selection choices:

• Wing Retention: Matty Ashton retains his position on the left wing following strong form.
• Hooker Swap: Hull KR's Jez Litten enters the starting side at hooker to offer a more offensive dynamic.
• Interchanges: Super League Man of Steel Brad O'Neill moves to the bench alongside Wigan team-mate Zach Eckersley.

According to BBC News reporting, Papua New Guinea demonstrated early resilience against Samoa before fading late in the game, underlining the necessity for England to sustain relentless high-tempo pressure throughout the entire 80 minutes.
