SANAA/RIYADH, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 19th Sep, 2026) Yemen’s Houthi forces spokesman claimed that large-scale attacks had been carried out against Saudi Arabia using ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones.
According to the Houthis, sensitive targets in Riyadh were hit. An Arab broadcaster reported that Houthi forces spokesman Yahya Saree said the operation was conducted in response to recent Saudi airstrikes on Yemen.
He rejected Saudi Arabia’s accusation that the Houthis had targeted Makkah. Meanwhile, Saudi authorities issued air-raid alerts for Riyadh and Al-Kharj during the night. Local reports said explosions were heard near Riyadh, while smoke and flames were later seen near the capital’s main airport.
Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree also claimed that a separate operation targeted Saudi Aramco facilities in Yanbu, causing large fires at the relevant sites. However, the claims could not be fully independently verified immediately. Saudi Arabia later withdrew the air-raid alerts issued for Riyadh and Al-Kharj.
Authorities initially provided no final details of any major damage or casualties.
The Houthis also claimed that Saudi Arabia had carried out 26 airstrikes in Yemen over the previous 24 hours. The ongoing conflict involving Iran has further heightened tensions in the middle East.
US President Donald Trump has extended sanctions imposed on Iran and plans to make Iran’s nuclear programme a key topic during his diplomatic activities at the United Nations next week. Meanwhile, Iran claimed that it had targeted an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident, along with disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb, has increased concerns about global energy supplies and shipping. Commercial shipping passing through the Bab el-Mandeb is already affected by ongoing security risks in the region, prompting some vessels and shipping companies to adopt additional precautionary measures. In the meantime, an investigative mission operating under a United Nations mandate said there was reasonable evidence to believe that the United States may have violated international humanitarian law during two attacks on Iran in February.
However, the determination of final legal responsibility will fall within the jurisdiction of the relevant legal institutions.
