Speaking on a private television programme, Hafiz Naeemur Rahman said the government had scheduled negotiations after 2 days.

He said Jamaat-e-Islami had staged sit-ins against the increase in petrol prices and the levy, adding that removing the levy and some taxes could reduce the price of petrol by Rs106. The Jamaat-e-Islami emir said global prices were a separate matter, but the government had imposed the levy to hide its failure.

He said the government collected Rs1.567 trillion in petroleum levy in one year. He said increasing the petrol price by Rs12 last night was a great injustice, adding that the levy could have been reduced.
