PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 7th Sep, 2026) Around 3,500 plants have been planted across four kanals of land in Bashir Abad area of Peshawar under the Miyawaki method, transforming an urban space into a dense mini-forest designed to grow rapidly and develop into a self-sustaining ecosystem of native species.
The plantation was inaugurated by Provincial Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Meena Khan under the Peshawar Revitalization Plan.
“The Miyawaki method of plantation was introduced by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki as an approach to establishing green oases in the heart of cities and suburban areas, bringing a multitude of benefits for the environment and human wellbeing,” said Muhammad Shakeel, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Peshawar.
Talking to newsmen, Muhammad Shakeel said the main objective of the Miyawaki method was to grow a maximum number of plants in limited spaces, particularly in urban areas, through soil conditioning and the use of organic fertilizers.
Under the method, he said, forests could be established in urban areas within a relatively short period, helping increase green cover in cities.
He said large tracts of land were generally unavailable in urban areas for conventional forest plantations, where plants are usually spaced widely apart. Therefore, small pieces of available land could be utilized to establish Miyawaki forests.
Under the Miyawaki method, the 3,500 plants at the site have been arranged in three layers comprising large, medium-sized plants and shrubs.
The larger plants have been planted at wider intervals, while smaller plants have been placed closer together, with shrubs occupying the intervening spaces.
Before plantation, the site was excavated to a depth of around five feet and filled with fertile soil mixed with canal silt, farm manure and rice husk to improve soil quality and support plant growth.
He expressed the hope that the desired results of the Miyawaki forest would be achieved within a couple of years.
The mini-forest would not only increase green cover in the city but also contribute to improving the urban environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, he added.
The DFO said that, according to an international estimate being used for the project, around 1,000 plants could absorb approximately one metric tonne of carbon from the atmosphere annually. Accordingly, the 3,500 plants planted at the site could potentially absorb around three to four metric tonnes of carbon annually.
He said the initiative was the first Miyawaki forest project undertaken by the Forest Department in Peshawar and would serve as a pilot project for replication at other suitable locations in the city.
