ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 11th Sep, 2026) On the occasion of the death anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) reaffirmed its commitment to following the Quaid-e-Azam’s principles, teachings and, in particular, his principles regarding journalism. In a joint statement, PFUJ President Rana Azeem and Secretary General Shakeel Ahmed said Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had described free, responsible and principled journalism as a fundamental necessity of a democratic society.

They said the PFUJ would continue its struggle to protect these high journalistic values. They said Pakistan was currently facing serious challenges, including internal and external pressures, unrest of various kinds and terrorism, adding that the media’s responsibility becomes even greater in such circumstances. The PFUJ leaders made it clear that the organisation would never support yellow journalism that could harm Pakistan’s national unity, state institutions, national security or the dignity of journalism.

They said dissent, criticism and accountability were fundamental rights and responsibilities of journalism; however, using journalism for personal interests, negative propaganda or the advancement of foreign interests was contrary to journalistic principles. They said the PFUJ had always raised its voice for genuine journalists and the legitimate rights of the journalist community and would continue to stand with journalists who considered journalism not merely a business but a responsible national and public service. The PFUJ condemned elements that used the sacred profession of journalism for personal or financial interests or tried to become spokespeople for foreign interests while living in Pakistan.

It clarified that such elements were neither part of its struggle nor would the organisation support any such role. PFUJ President Rana Azeem and Secretary General Shakeel Ahmed also drew the attention of the government, particularly the information minister, information secretary and principal information officer, to the fact that the PFUJ was a genuine and representative organisation of journalists that had long been struggling for journalists’ rights, press freedom and responsible journalism. They said the PFUJ had also represented Pakistani journalists internationally and had always effectively highlighted the country’s and journalism’s genuine issues.

During PFUJ Secretary General Shakeel Ahmed’s recent visit, detailed discussions were held with senior representatives of the International Federation of Journalists on the challenges facing journalism in Pakistan, journalists’ rights and the state of press freedom.

He presented Pakistan’s position and the issues of the Pakistani journalist community in a forceful manner and clearly stated his position in response to any one-sided narrative against Pakistan.
