HYDERABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th Aug, 2026) Strengthening the role of young agricultural graduates in tackling climate change, supporting farmers, and ensuring food security is crucial for the future of Sindh, experts observed during a meeting between the Sindh Agriculture University (SAU), Tandojam, and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations.

A delegation of FAO Pakistan, led by Officer-in-Charge James Robert Okoth, met Vice Chancellor SAU Engr. Prof Dr Altaf Ali Siyal and discussed ways to further strengthen institutional cooperation, particularly in education, research, student internships and capacity-building.

The SAU spokesperson said on Tuesday that the FAO delegation included AFAOR Administration Maria Usman, Project Manager, RAFAA Pedro Grazon and Provincial Coordinator-GCF Project Dr Ashfaque Ahmed Nahiyoon.

Dr. Altaf Siyal appreciated FAO Pakistan’s continued support to the agriculture sector and said Sindh was among the regions facing serious challenges from changing climatic conditions. He said the situation had placed greater responsibility on agricultural experts and institutions to provide practical support to farmers.

“Climate change is already affecting agriculture, water availability and farmers’ livelihoods. Agricultural experts must work closely with farmers and relevant institutions to develop practical solutions,” he said.

The vice chancellor stressed the need to connect agricultural education and research with practical field experience so that graduates could play a meaningful role in addressing emerging challenges related to climate change, food security, modern agricultural technologies and sustainable farming.

He said stronger institutional linkages between SAU and FAO could provide students and faculty members with greater opportunities for research, internships, professional training and capacity development.

FAO Pakistan Officer-in-Charge James Okoth recalled the organization’s successful previous collaboration with Sindh Agriculture University and expressed interest in expanding joint initiatives in the future.

He emphasized greater involvement of SAU students and agricultural experts in initiatives aimed at helping Sindh’s farming communities adapt to climate-related challenges. He said FAO wanted to work with local communities and institutions, particularly in disadvantaged areas of Sindh, to promote agricultural development and beneficial, sustainable farming practices.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from both institutions to expand cooperation, strengthen institutional linkages, and create practical opportunities for students and faculty, with the broader objective of supporting farmers and contributing to sustainable agricultural development in Sindh.
