Influential people in Sindh compromise, while the Sindh Assembly voted to support the establishment of One Unit, renowned economist says at seminar.
KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 12th Sep, 2026) Economist Dr Qaiser Bengali has said that calls to break up Sindh are not new and that figures from Sindh themselves have been involved in attacks on the province.
Addressing a seminar in Karachi, he said all political parties were involved in the imposition of the petroleum levy, while under the Constitution, the provinces have a right to GST. Dr Qaiser Bengali said General Sales Tax was transferred to the Federal government with the support of political parties and was later returned to the provinces. The economist said influential people in Sindh compromise and that local figures have been involved in attacks on the province.
He said Sindh was separated from the Bombay Presidency after a major struggle, while the Sindh Assembly later voted to support the establishment of One Unit. According to Qaiser Bengali, it is not enough to view Sindh's history merely through the lens of external invaders; the role of local political, social and influential groups must also be examined in its historical context.
He said Sindh's history had also been shaped during different periods by political conflicts, struggles for power and the links between local elements and external forces. Qaiser Bengali said an impartial and critical study of history was essential to understand Sindh's past, so that events could be viewed in the light of facts and historical evidence rather than emotions.
